Rivers flood in Iowa and Missouri after heavy rain, roads closed

June 12, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 1 min read

Flood warnings are in force across eastern Iowa and northern Missouri: the Cedar and English rivers have left their banks, and water is still rising in places.

The National Weather Service reports minor river flooding near Conesville on the Cedar River and at Kalona on the English River, affecting Louisa, Muscatine, Washington and Johnson counties in Iowa.

In northern Missouri, flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues across Adair, Chariton, Grundy, Linn, Livingston, Macon, Mercer and Putnam counties. Several roads closed on the morning of June 12, and stream gauges show water still rising in some locations.

The warnings remain in effect through June 13–15 depending on the river, with the longest running until 3:00 AM on June 15.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Never drive across a flooded road — turn around.
• Keep children away from streams and drainage channels.
• Follow local road-closure updates.
• Move valuables up from basements in affected areas.
