Torrential rain batters Romania's mountain regions

June 12, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 1 min read

Orange warnings for heavy rain and atmospheric instability are in force in the Romanian counties of Alba and Brașov: up to 40 mm and more may fall within one to three hours.

Romania's national weather service warns of periods of pronounced atmospheric instability in the mountain areas, with torrential downpours, thunderstorms and the risk of hail.

Rainfall totals of 40 litres per square metre (40 mm) and more within just one to three hours are enough to flood mountain roads and swell small rivers in the Carpathians.

The warnings have been running since midday on June 11 and continue while the unstable air mass remains over the region.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Avoid Carpathian gorges and stream beds during downpours.
• Drivers on mountain roads should expect washouts and falling stones.
• Don't shelter from hail under trees.
