NWS Honolulu Issues Flood Watch for Maui and Big Island
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for Maui and the Big Island from Friday evening through late Saturday night due to heavy rain expected from Lala.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued the Flood Watch on August 13 at 4:53 PM HST. The watch is scheduled to take effect on Friday evening and remain in place until August 16 at 6:00 AM HST, covering Maui and the Big Island.
Heavy rainfall associated with Lala is expected to begin Friday evening and extend through Saturday night. Upslope and windward areas of the Big Island may receive 10 to 15 inches of rain, with localized amounts up to 25 inches possible. Upslope and windward areas of Maui are expected to see 8 to 12 inches of rain, with localized amounts up to 15 inches.
Excessive rainfall could result in flash flooding. Elevated runoff and overflowing streams may lead to the closure of flood-prone roads and low-lying areas.
Rapid runoff in urban areas could cause property damage and more significant flooding. Affected regions include various parts of Maui and the Big Island, including Kona, Kohala, Haleakala, Kipahulu, and central valley areas.
