The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for Kauai, Oahu, and Niihau through Thursday afternoon due to anticipated heavy rainfall and tropical moisture.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued the Flood Watch on October 7 at 3:07 PM HST. The alert remains in effect until October 8 at 6:00 PM HST for the islands of Niihau, Kauai, and Oahu.
According to meteorologists, a deepening area of low pressure located north of the Hawaiian Islands is pulling deep tropical moisture northward across the region. This atmospheric condition is expected to generate heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms beginning Wednesday night and persisting through Thursday. Training of heavy showers capable of producing intense rainfall rates is also possible.
Excessive rainfall creates a risk of flash flooding throughout the designated areas. Elevated runoff and overflowing streams may force the closure of flood-prone roads and low-lying locations. Rapid runoff in urban centers could result in more significant flooding and property damage.
The watch covers specific areas including Niihau, Kauai Southwest, Kauai Mountains, Waianae Coast, Oahu North Shore, Olomana, Central Oahu, Waianae Mountains, Kauai North, Kauai East, Kauai South, East Honolulu, Honolulu Metro, Ewa Plain, Koolau Windward, and Koolau Leeward.
