The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Hurricane Watch for the Big Island East region, including Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano. Significant winds are expected to affect the area starting Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the latest local forecast projects equivalent tropical storm force winds. Peak winds are forecast to reach 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph. The window for these winds is expected to last from Friday evening until early Saturday morning. There remains a steady potential for wind speeds of 58 to 73 mph.
The potential impacts of these winds are classified as significant. Damage may occur to roofing, siding, porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings could experience failures of windows, doors, and garage doors, while unanchored mobile homes may face damage. Additionally, unsecured lightweight objects risk becoming dangerous projectiles.
The storm is also expected to snap or uproot several large trees, especially where roots are shallow, and blow over fences and road signs. Debris may make some roads, bridges, causeways, and access routes impassable. Scattered power and communications outages are also expected, primarily in areas with above-ground utility lines.
