Severe thunderstorms sweep northern Greece

June 12, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 1 min read

Orange thunderstorm warnings are in force across northern Greece on June 12: West and Central Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly and later Thrace are in the path of the storms.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service activated orange-level warnings starting from the morning of June 12 for West and Central Macedonia, extending to Epirus and Thessaly by mid-morning and reaching Thrace in the evening.

Severe Mediterranean thunderstorms typically bring intense downpours, hail and strong gusts — a particular danger in mountain valleys, where streams rise within minutes.

The warning wave moves west to east through the day, so conditions in each region deteriorate at different hours.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Postpone mountain hikes in the north of the country.
• Park cars away from trees.
• Unplug sensitive electronics during the storm.
• Tourists should follow hotel staff instructions if hail begins.
