Flood Watch Issued for the Hawaiian Islands

September 17, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for all main Hawaiian Islands, effective from September 17 at 3:15 AM HST until September 18 at 6:00 AM HST.

Remnant moisture from former Tropical Storm Norbert is bringing periods of moderate to heavy showers to the region. The affected areas include Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island, with an emphasis mainly on windward sides.

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible through late tonight. Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas may also receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff.

A band of remnant moisture will move west across the islands, bringing moderate to locally heavy showers. There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms, which could produce briefly higher rain rates and increase the risk of flash flooding.

Residents and visitors in the affected areas should monitor later forecasts. Preparedness is advised to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Monitor later forecasts for updates.
• Be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
• Stay away from flood-prone roads and low-lying areas.
