October 9, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, has issued a Flood Watch for portions of southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina from Saturday morning through Sunday morning. Tropical moisture is expected to bring heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding to the area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC office issued the Flood Watch on October 9 at 1:23 PM EDT. The watch is scheduled to begin on Saturday morning, October 10, and remain in effect until October 11 at 11:00 AM EDT.

The alert covers multiple areas across two states. In southeast North Carolina, affected locations include Columbus, Inland Pender, Coastal Pender, Inland New Hanover, Coastal New Hanover, Inland Brunswick, and Coastal Brunswick. In northeast South Carolina, the watch applies to Coastal Horry, Inland Georgetown, Coastal Georgetown, Central Horry, and Northern Horry.

According to the NWS, tropical moisture will overspread the region from Saturday through Sunday, producing showers and thunderstorms capable of heavy rainfall. General rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are anticipated, with localized areas potentially receiving up to 8 inches.

The excessive rainfall may lead to flash flooding, particularly along and near low-lying and flood-prone locations. Runoff from the heavy precipitation could also cause flooding of nearby rivers, creeks, and streams.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Do not drive through any flooded roadways.
• Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
