Coastal Flood Warning Issued for Virginia Beach

September 23, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and Beach Hazards Statement for Virginia Beach. The alerts remain in effect through early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways will experience two to three feet of inundation above ground level. This flooding will extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays, leading to the closure of numerous roads and the potential flooding of vehicles.

The coastal flooding creates an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses situated near the waterfront and shoreline. In addition to the flood warning, a High Surf Advisory warns of large breaking waves reaching 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone until Thursday evening.

A Beach Hazards Statement is also in effect through the evening, indicating a high risk of rip currents along the coast. The combination of high surf and strong currents creates dangerous swimming conditions in the affected area.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
• Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth if travel is required.
• Remain out of the water to avoid dangerous surf and rip current conditions.
