The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Atlantic Coastal Cape May, Coastal Atlantic, and Coastal Ocean, active from September 24 until September 26. The region is also under a High Surf Advisory and High Rip Current Risk, bringing threats of inundation, high waves, and dangerous currents.
According to the National Weather Service, the Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 2:00 AM EDT on Saturday, September 26. The advisory warns of one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Widespread roadway flooding is expected in coastal and bayside communities and along inland tidal waterways, making many roads impassable.
In addition to the flooding, a High Surf Advisory is in place until 8:00 PM EDT on Saturday, bringing breaking waves of up to 9 feet to the surf zone. A High Rip Current Risk also extends through Saturday evening. These conditions are expected to cause dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion that could become significant, with potential sand dune breaching.
Forecasters note that moderate tidal flooding could persist into the weekend. Major tidal flooding impacts cannot be ruled out, especially within back bay areas. Some damage to vulnerable structures may also begin to occur due to the rising waters and surf.
