Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory Issued for Virginia Beach

September 24, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Virginia Beach, in effect until 4:00 PM EDT on Friday, September 25. The area is also experiencing high surf and a high risk of rip currents.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, the Coastal Flood Warning warns of two to three feet of inundation above ground level. This widespread flooding is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, posing an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront.

Flooding is also expected to extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays. This will result in several road closures and the flooding of vehicles, with water depths in some areas being sufficient to close numerous roads and threaten properties.

In addition to the flooding, a High Surf Advisory is active until 7:00 AM EDT Friday, bringing large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet to the surf zone. A Beach Hazards Statement is also in effect through this evening due to a high risk of rip currents.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
• Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth if travel is required.
• Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming and dangerous surf conditions.
