Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory Issued for New Jersey Coast

September 23, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning alongside a High Surf Advisory and High Rip Current Risk for multiple coastal areas.

The active weather alerts cover Atlantic Coastal Cape May, Coastal Atlantic, and Coastal Ocean. The Coastal Flood Warning is in effect from 4 PM Wednesday to 1 AM EDT Friday, with one to two feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Moderate tidal flooding could continue into the weekend, and major tidal flooding cannot be ruled out, especially within the back bays.

In addition to the flooding threat, a High Surf Advisory remains in place until 6 PM EDT Friday, bringing large breaking waves of 6 to 12 feet in the surf zone along with significant beach erosion. A High Rip Current Risk is also active through Friday afternoon, creating dangerous swimming conditions where rip currents can sweep swimmers away from shore.

Impacts at this level include widespread roadway flooding in coastal and bayside communities and along inland tidal waterways, leaving many roads impassable. Some damage to vulnerable structures may begin to occur, accompanied by localized beach erosion.

Additional updates and water level information for local tide gauges can be found by visiting the National Water Prediction Service website at https://water.noaa.gov/wfo/phi.

• Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters.
• Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water.
• Obey posted beach flags and swim near a lifeguard if possible.
